Joel Greenshields - Sophomore Athlete of the Year
UCSC's Olympic qualifier, Joel Greenshields has been named the University of Arizona Male Sophomore Athlete of the Year. The award was presented at the annual C.A.T.S. (Commitment to an Athlete’s Total Success) Awards Banquet hosted by the University of Arizona Department of Intercollegiate Athletics on Monday, April 14, 2008.
This annual awards dinner is presented by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and honored student-athletes that demonstrate not only outstanding athletic ability but who achieved a well-rounded and balanced collegiate career in academics and leadership.
When Joel is not at school in Arizona, he represents the University of Calgary Swim Club and swims under Coach Jan Bidrman. Joel was a member of the 2006 Pan Pacific Championship team that competed in Victoria, BC. In 2007, Joel represented Canada at the 2007 World Aquatic Championships where he finished 7th in the men’s 4x100m freestyle relay. Greenshields will be competing at his first Olympic Games this summer in Beijing, qualifying in the men’s 4x100m freestyle relay.
Jarrod Ballem -Tenth in the World!!

SEVILLE, Spain-
Jarrod withstood some heavy contact (see video) in the late stages of Tuesday’s men’s five kilometre race to finish 10th at the FINA World Open Water Swimming Championships held on the Guadalquivir River....."Today was great," said Ballem. "I was aggressive and kept myself in good position for the entire race."....With only 500 metres to go, Ballem was tied for third and only five metres behind the leaders. "I tried to get up to the lead," he said. "But Maarten just pounded on me and another guy sandwiched me and I took a beating. But I still finished well. I just didn’t have it in the last 150 to hang on with those guys."This was a stronger field than in 2004 and this was definitely a much better swim."
On Sunday, Ballem didn’t qualify for the Olympic Games finishing 30th in the 10-kilometre event. He’ll get a second chance on June 1 at a test event in Beijing. Open water swimming makes its Olympic debut this summer with the 10 kilometre events for men and women."After the 10 kilometre, the confidence was a little shot," said Ballem. "But I woke up the following morning knowing this was my last race at a world championships and I wanted to go out on a good note. It definitely gives me the confidence knowing that if I get myself up with the leaders I have a chance."....

N2 SWIMMERS - EUROPEAN TRIP

Twelve swimmers from N2 have finally arrived in Sweden for their first Europe competition starting tomorrow. The swimmers departed Calgary at 10am April 30th and arrived in Malmo, Sweden at 11:55pm May 1. The swimmers flew from Calgary to Toronto, then to Frankfurt Germany, hopped on a train and Eurorailed to Malmo through Hamburg and then Copenhagen Denmark. The trip up also involved parking the train on a ferry and sailing across the strait to Denmark.
The swimmers were also following a London 2012 preparation plan put together by Coach Kevin prior to leaving which included a strategy to identify and track performance markers, utilize a sleep/wake timetable to put their bodies through a phase advance of their body clocks, proper eating and hydration strategies, and the exposure and avoidance of light to help adjust the circadian rhythm. This helped to accomplish one of the goals of the trip which is to educate the swimmers on the strategies of travelling through an 8 hour time change to the East (as will be the case in 2012 for the London Olympics) and identifying and familiarizing themselves to the riggor of travel. Secondly, the swimmers will be billeted in Sweden and then Germany next and will help our athletes to understand and communicate with others from different backgrounds and cultures and learn how to be independant in a new and exciting environment. The swimmers start competing in Sweden tomorrow so stay tuned do see how they do! Go to the link below for online results.
First day in Germany - (Week 2)
The N2 swimmers arrived in Germany last night to quite a welcome.. The host families were all there to welcome us with open arms..Everyone was very friendly and sincerely pleased to have us here... Some of the moms drove us all in to the City of Dortmund to do some good ol power shopping!!! When we returned we had a session in the outdoor 50M pool which will host the competition. It was a beautiful warm sunny day, not always typical for this meet, so we are off to a great start... Stay tuned and follow the link for results!!!!
Day 1 Racing
Day 1 went well ...with some of our swimmers going best times, and some close to them... Our German hosts took us to old Arnsberg during the moning for a short cultural excursion... Some incredible history of the region was presented to us from a guided tour in engliish..Quite a picturesque town with some deep historic roots including Napoleon! The weather was hot and sunny making day 1 in the outdoor pool pretty awesome.... Coach Kevin and a few swimmers were invited to a dinner with the Mayor and dignitaries... What a feast!!! and everone was exteremely friendly... All in all yet another great day...
Last Day in Europe
N2 swimmers finished off their tour with some more impressive swimming on the last day of the meet. The squad earned a great deal of respect due to their level of performance and more importantly, how they conducted themselves throughout the competition. The days started at 7:30am and finished around 7pm with a couple of short breaks during the sessions and a break for lunch. They were long days and our German hosts organized some great functions in the evenings as well and kept us very busy.
Our athletes learned a great deal about themselves, and learned they can race well under many conditions. This was an action packed tour with little time for rest. Our swimmers had to deal with the stress of travel, long sessions, unfamiliar environments, and different daily routines in order to perform at their best and they did an incredible job!
We would like to thank our host families in Sweden and Germany for their incredible hospitality and their efforts to ensure our swimmers felt at home. I am sure our swimmers will never forget this experience.
