National Development Group (NDG) Requirements and Expectations
National Development Group swim practice is offered 8 times per week.
Dryland exercises are in addition; being 4-5x per week for 30-45 minutes per session either directly before or after swim practice.
The NDG program is designed with the intention of providing the curriculum and atmosphere necessary to qualify and compete at National age-group Championships.
The typical NDG swimmer is 10-16 years of age (boys 11-16 & girls 13-15), a positive, hard-working person. Generally this age-group also involved in another sports besides swimming (according to the Canadian Long Term Athlete Development plan LTAD). We encourage this, taking into account that there are no conflicting practice hours for both sports.
Requirements for the National Development Group (NDG):
Attend all competitions recommended by the Head age-group coach
Athletes must compete in and wear attire manufactured by sponsoring manufacturer - Speedo - during all competitions
Limited interference from other sports activities. Taking part at other sports activities is however encouraged (according to the Canadian Long Term Athlete Development plan LTAD)
Parental involvement in swimming decisions must be limited
This is a learning process both for the swimmers and parents. Once swimmers achieve competency and get older (14 and over), the swimming relationship must be limited to coach/athlete for them to progress to their greatest capabilities while maintaining a certain level of sanity. Overbearing parents are a burden to the coach AND to the ATHLETE
Display history of above requirements and achieving performance objectives BEFORE being allowed into NDG group
Ability to train at or above a level appropriate for current experience and speed
Boys 15/16 & girls 14/15 must achieve 4% of AGN time standard or faster
Boys 14 & girls 13 must achieve 4% of AGN time standard or faster (they cannot qualify in any 50m event!)
Boys 11-13 & girls 10-12 must achieve 4% of AGN time standard or faster (they cannot qualify in any 50 or 100 event!)
Ultimately, Head Age-Group coach has final say in group appointments
Goals and Expectations of the National Development Group (NDG):
NDG Swimmers will work towards placing at Canadian Age Group Championships and Canadian Senior Nationals (if applicable). Ones placed, the goal will be to perform at the highest potential level at these Championships.
