Calgary (June 18, 2010) – In
preparation for the 2012 London Olympics, World Record Holder Paul
Kornfeld has announced that he will be training full time in
Calgary at the High Performance Swimming Centre under the guidance
of coach Jan Birdman.
“I’m really excited about this move and really
committed to achieving my Olympic goals,” said Kornfeld while
competing at the Canada Cup in Vancouver.
Kornfeld made his debut for Canada last summer while qualifying in
the 200 breaststroke for the World Championships Team that competed
in Rome. Following Worlds, Kornfeld broke a World Record in the
4x100 short course medley relay swimming the breaststroke leg, an
achievement that motivated Kornfeld to strive for the 2012 Games
Team. The world mark was lowered by Russia at the end of
December of 2009.
In 2009, Paul graduated from the University of Stanford, where he
had been swimming since 2005. Aside from being a national champion
in the 200 breaststroke for Canada, Kornfeld is a two-time NCAA
champion.
Kornfeld holds the third fastest time in the 50, 100 and 200
breaststroke for Canada and holds the 50 and 100m Alberta
provincial records.
Paul has represented the University of Calgary Swim Club for the
last three years, placing 3rd at the 2008 Olympic Trials, nearly
missing the Olympic Team. Paul grew up in Houston, TX but has
strong ties to Calgary, both set of grandparents reside in
Calgary.
Head Coach Jan Bidrman says “Paul will bring strong
leadership to the Calgary and Canadian swimming environment”.
Bidrman has coached Olympians Mike Brown and Morgan Knabe,
two of Canada’s all time best breaststroke swimmers.
Last April, Kornfeld qualified for the Canadian Team that will be
competing at the Pan Pacific Championships in Irvine late August.
